Ever since her catwalk debut at the age of 16, Kaia Gerber has been storming the international catwalks of Milan, Paris and New York with the grace, panache and wit of a veteran model decades older. With a swish of chestnut hair and a maturity that belies her years, Gerber effortlessly moves between edgy and coquettish, fronting global fashion campaigns as well as appearing on the cover of international fashion magazines and scooping up Model of the year at The Fashion Awards in December 2018.
As the face of Jimmy Choo’s Spring/Summer 2019 collection, we catch up in an exclusive interview where we learn of the wisdom passed onto her from her mother Cindy Crawford; discover her tomboy side; hear about her love of math and psychology and the feel good factor of women supporting women.
“I REMEMBER MY MOM HAD AN INCREDIBLE PAIR OF JIMMY CHOO'S THAT I ALWAYS WANTED TO BORROW. I WOULD GO INTO HER CLOSET AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK TO SEE IF I HAD GROWN INTO THEM.”
WHICH WOMEN DO YOU ADMIRE AND WHY?
"I really admire women who support other women. I think we are all stronger together, and it is so inspiring for me when I see women lifting each other up. "
WHAT ARE YOUR GO-TO OUTFITS FOR A VACATION?
"My vacation outfits are typically kept very dressed down because on holiday you want to feel comfortable and look effortless. I usually veer towards a dress and an easy slip on shoe, something like the ANNABELL flat or LELA flat. "
WHY DO YOU LIKE COLLABORATING WITH STEVEN MEISEL?
"Steven Meisel has always been an idol of mine. I think he is so genuine in the art that he creates, and I am so honored to be a part of his creative process."
IT IS OFTEN SAID THAT SHOES HAVE A MAGICAL POWER TO TRANSFORM, WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?
"I definitely think that the shoes you have on can change your mood. I grew up always wearing sneakers, but when I want to dress it up, a good heel always gives you that extra boost of confidence."
“I THINK THE CONFIDENCE THEY WANT WOMEN TO FEEL WHEN THEY PUT ON A PAIR OF JIMMY CHOO’S REALLY SHOWS THROUGH IN THE COLLECTION.”
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST MEMORY OF WEARING JIMMY CHOO?
"I remember my mom had an incredible pair of Jimmy Choo's that I always wanted to borrow. I would go into her closet at least once a week to see if I had grown into them. Sadly I never did. But that’s fine, because now I have my own pair!"
WHAT ADVICE DID YOUR MOTHER GIVE YOU THAT YOU WOULD PASS DOWN TO YOUR CHILDREN?
"A lot of people ask me what my mom has taught me and it goes beyond what pose to make or what my good side is. My mom always prioritized family first, and that is a lesson I will carry with me throughout life. She leads by example and I have always admired that about her. Also how kindly she treats people and how professional she is. Those are qualities that really inspire me."
FAVOURITE SHOES FROM THE SHOOT?
"Now that is a tough one! I think there is a shoe to match every occasion and every mood. Although I adore the ANNABELL knotted slingbacks. They are statement shoes with the wow factor and yet go effortlessly with anything in your wardrobe."
WHAT DOES JIMMY CHOO THE BRAND MEAN TO YOU?
"Strength and power come to mind. And it’s been great to be part of the youthful spirit of the brand. I think the confidence they want women to feel when they put on a pair of Jimmy Choo’s really shows through in the collection."
WHAT DOES SUCCESS MEAN TO YOU AND WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE IN LIFE?
"I think that success is a personal achievement. I think the only person who can determine your success is you! I am constantly challenging myself and creating new goals, I don’t think that’s something I’ll ever give up."
IF YOU WEREN’T A MODEL, WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD DO?
"If I wasn’t modeling I would probably be in school! I like math or I would major in psychology."
WHOSE SHOES WOULD YOU LIKE TO STEP INTO FOR A DAY, PAST OR PRESENT?
"I have always been very intrigued by David Bowie’s mind, and clothes!"
“I ADORE THE ANNABELL KNOTTED SLINGBACKS. THEY ARE STATEMENT SHOES WITH THE WOW FACTOR AND YET GO EFFORTLESSLY WITH ANYTHING IN YOUR WARDROBE.”
