For Spring Summer 2016, Chloë Sevigny shares an exclusive interview and editorial photo diary including some of her favourite styles from the LA inspired Jimmy Choo collection.
The New Yorker called her the ‘coolest girl in the world’. Since her critically acclaimed Oscar-nominated portrayal of Lana Tisdel in 1999’s hit Boys Don’t Cry, model and ‘Queen of the Indies’ Sevigny has become a fashion favourite known for her effortlessly cool style.Citing her father and her childhood growing up in suburban Connecticut as influencing her eclectic style and passion for vintage fashion, Chloë Sevigny has become a style icon, regularly appearing on best dressed lists for her individual approach to completing a unique outfit with well-chosen accessories.
DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE AND ANY ERAS, ICONS OR INFLUENCES YOU HAVE?
"Growing up in suburban Connecticut most of my style influences were people I'd see around me, the rebels at school, the girls who were into alternative music, in clunky shoes and black mock turtlenecks, they had the bumper sticker for the alternative station on the back of their Volvos, they were the crowd I wanted to roll with".
FAVOURITE JIMMY CHOO STYLE FROM THE JIMMY CHOO SHOOT? WHY DO YOU LIKE IT AND WHERE WOULD YOU WEAR IT?
"I loved the white LUCY pumps with the ankle strap and the red vinyl at the toe cleavage. These shoes would be great with jeans or a sexy dress. They reminded me of white pumps I'd wear in the 90s, with everything. I love a white shoe, it's a bold statement."
YOU HAVE WRITTEN A BOOK ON YOUR STYLE EVOLUTION – WHAT IS THE ONE PIECE OF FASHION ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO A FRIEND?
"When friends ask for advice on what to wear I'm always honest and also tell them to wear whatever they are most comfortable in, what they feel sexy and confident in. I think it's good to know your strengths and what shapes or colors work for you and run with that. Understated always works as well".
HAVE YOU HAD ANY PIECES IN YOUR WARDROBE FOR 20 YEARS OR MORE – WHAT IS IT AND WHY HAVE YOU NOT PARTED WITH IT?
"I have an extensive archive in Connecticut and have held on to most of my wardrobe from high school on. I sometimes unearth things like a pair of jeans, or a sweater, T-shirt or boots and cycle them back into my everyday wardrobe. Or find an old designer piece I wore to an event and then wear it to a wedding or a party".
THE JIMMY CHOO SS16 COLLECTION TAKES INSPIRATION FROM THE LAID BACK LOUCHE STYLE OF LA. SINCE YOU’VE LIVED IN LA AND NY, DO YOU FIND A DIFFERENCE IN THE STYLE? ARE YOU TEAM LA OR TEAM NYC?
"I'm a New Yorker thru and thru, at this point I've lived there longer than anywhere else, it's in my blood and always on the brain. I can't imagine ever settling down anywhere else. LA is a place I go to work, it's an industry town which has its perks, and the art and music scenes are always thriving."
WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU GOT YOUR FASHION INSTINCT?
"I think my fashion instinct came from my father who always took a lot of pride in the way he looked and also an innate need to rebel against the status quo. That has subsided over the years, but underneath it's still there."
"I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A BIG FAN OF JIMMY CHOO. JIMMY CHOO TO ME IS A VERY GORGEOUS LUXURIOUS ACCESSORIES BRAND; I FEEL CONFIDENT WHENEVER WEARING A PAIR OF JIMMY CHOOS"
WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST FASHION MEMORY?
"My earliest fashion memory is of my father polishing his shoes. He was a Marine so that's where his habit of polishing his shoes every night when he came home stemmed from. I remember being in my night gown and smelling the polish and watching the care he took over these items he cherished, it was an important lesson.."
JIMMY CHOO CELEBRATES ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR AND IS REMEMBERING ITS MOST ICONIC MOMENTS. WHAT WOULD BE YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT OF THE LAST 20 YEARS?
"Choosing a select memory from the part 20 years is so difficult. So many swirling around my head, it's a long time. I think my fondest are dancing with my friends at a club we used to go to every Sunday. It was like our living room. A safe place to lose yourself in wild abandon to the music and cry and laugh."
THIS SHOOT WAS INSPIRED BY A ROAD TRIP – HAVE YOU BEEN ON A MEMORABLE ROAD TRIP?
"One of my favorite road trips I took with my friend Tara Subkoff, her parents had given her their old car and we were driving it from Connecticut to Los Angeles. We had to rush because I was nominated for an Oscar and we had to make it in time. It was my first time seeing the South West of America and I was awe struck by the scope and beauty."
SUNGLASSES FEATURE REGULARLY IN YOUR OUTFITS – WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR WHEN SELECTING A NEW PAIR?
"Sunglasses are an everyday must for me. My eyes are sensitive to the light and once I find a pair I love I wear them till they fall apart. I'm really looking forward to wearing the bejewelled ones from the shoot, so fun and they'd elevate any outfit."
