In My Choos - Sienna Miller
The British-American actress, who broke out in the early 2000s with starring female protagonist roles in Layer Cake, Alfie and Factory Girl, has always understood the power that a little real-life mystery can hold. She spent much of her early career navigating tabloid scrutiny with equal parts poise and gumption, she’s posted just one photo to her Instagram account since joining two years ago and—she’s no stranger to doing things on her terms.
“Someone once said to me, ‘Let them come to you,’” recalls the 37-year-old beauty, now sitting at ease in the sunny Midtown Manhattan loft serving as the backdrop for the shoot. That philosophy along with Miller’s witty and mischievous sense of self and fashion, has long set her apart from many of her Hollywood peers —both on-screen and off.
“WE’RE IN A REALLY PIVOTAL, INTERESTING MOMENT FOR GENDER. I THINK WHAT PROBABLY DEFINES THE MODERN WOMAN IS THAT SHE DOESN’T EVEN HAVE TO REFER TO HERSELF AS A WOMAN, THESE DAYS. I THINK WE’RE ON THE WAY TO EQUAL”
WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR WOMEN IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?
"Becoming a mother, I really feel that sense of empowerment that comes from growing a human inside your body and giving birth to it. I mean there's just no question that women are powerful and strong and amazing, and I hope that we manage to solidify this sisterhood, and really fight against the injustices of this heavily male-dominated world.”
WHEN YOU STARTED OUT WERE YOU CONSCIOUS THAT YOU CHOSE WOMEN THAT WERE MAYBE NOT THE TYPICAL SORT OF INGÉNUE. WAS THAT SOMETHING YOU WERE CONSCIOUS OF?
“Yes. That's true. I think that the common thread between women that I am attracted to playing is strength. I think they kind of run all shades of the gamut. They can be detestable and irresponsible or maternal but I am not drawn to kind of the ingénue wallflower lady. Yet.”
WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT GROWING UP?
"I love that feeling of wisdom that comes with age."
"SOMEBODY WHO’S REALLY COMFORTABLE IN THEIR OWN SKIN, SOMEBODY WHO IS INDIVIDUAL, SOMEONE WHO IS BRAVE AND COURAGEOUS, ALWAYS STANDS OUT"
WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL POWERFUL?
“I think the most powerful that I feel is when I make a stand for myself. I think we're at this point where women feel like they have a voice, and I feel much more empowered by the movement of this time's up, Me Too thing that's been happening to really stand up for myself. And I think there's a wave of women behind each other, in a way that there never was before, and that's incredibly empowering.”
WHEN SHOULD ONE NEVER COMPROMISE?
“I think you should never compromise when you feel like your integrity is being challenged. And I think that's something that women feel often, and are often pressurized into feeling like they need to compromise. It's a very difficult thing to not, but I feel like we have to start trying.”
WHAT DEFINES A MODERN WOMAN IN 2019?
“I think we're in a really pivotal, interesting moment for gender. I think what probably defines the modern woman is that she doesn't even have to refer to herself as a woman.”
WHAT SETS SOMEONE APART FROM A CROWD?
"Somebody who's really comfortable in their own skin, somebody who is individual, someone who is brave and courageous, always stands out."
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR GOLDEN RULE TO DRESSING UP?
"I don’t think I have a golden rule to dressing up… actually that’s not true - you definitely want to wear shoes that you can dance in. Or be prepared to take them off, which I always am.”
OUR PRE FALL COLLECTION IS 90S INSPIRED. WHAT WAS IT ABOUT THIS ERA THAT INSPIRED YOU?
“I mean, the 90s for me were just the chicest moment. Women in oversized blazers and very little makeup, I love that aesthetic. Because no one really looked like they were trying too hard. I get so sad sometimes looking back and seeing these pre-Instagram, pre-social media days where people were really wild and reckless and nothing was contrived or thought about, and it was a really original moment in fashion. It didn't feel it at the time. I was young, but. I remember it. But it just felt like scruffy, but now it's such a cool look, and I remember being at school and looking at photos of Winona Ryder and Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kate Moss and Johnny Depp.”
WHAT ARE FIVE WORDS THAT YOU WOULD USE TO SUM UP JIMMY CHOO?
“Five words I would use to describe Jimmy Choo would be ... elegant, classic, cool, fun, glamorous, comfortable. What more do you want in a shoe? That’s six words, a bonus word!”
